The United Nations Humanitarian Civil-Military Coordination eCourse (UN-CMCoord eCourse) is an online learning experience that brings together practitioners, experts and relevant resources to provide a well-rounded and interactive approach to learning and applying the UN-CMCoord handbook.

Course Overview

Over the course of six chapters, the UN-CMCoord eCourse will contribute to our awareness and understanding of UN-CMCoord concepts and principles and their practical applications in different operating environments, including the likely dilemmas you will confront. Throughout this online learning experience, we will learn how to successfully navigate the civil-military coordination landscape.

Course Outline

The UN-CMCoord eCourse is composed of six chapters. Chapters 1 to 4 are mandatory. Upon completion of the first four chapters you can choose to complete either “Chapter 5 : Working in Natural Disasters” or “Chapter 6: Working in Complex Emergencies” to obtain your certificate. We encourage you to complete both chapter 5 and 6 to gain a broader understanding of humanitarian civil-military coordination.

CHAPTER 1: HUMANITARIAN ACTION
Edem Wosornu introduces you to the foundations of humanitarian work, including an overview of key stakeholders, as well as the core humanitarian principles and a basic overview of international humanitarian law that inform humanitarian action.

CHAPTER 2: HUMANITARIAN COORDINATION
Edem Wosornu looks at humanitarian coordination and coordination mechanisms between a multitude of humanitarian actors and other external partners.

CHAPTER 3: UNDERSTANDING THE MILITARY
Lieutenant Colonel Mathias Järvare introduces military concepts intended to assist humanitarian actors in gaining an understanding of key military actors, general military organization, and military missions and planning. El Hadji Ibrahima Diene “Boly” provides perspectives from his time with the military including in peacekeeping, and with UN-CMCoord in Mali.

CHAPTER 4: KEY CONCEPTS OF UN-CMCOORD
Michael Marx describes the general approach of the United Nations to humanitarian civil-military coordination (UN-CMCoord), reviewing the main principles of the global guidelines, outlining the key elements and tasks of UN-CMCoord.

CHAPTER 5: WORKING IN NATURAL DISASTERS
Ronaldo Reario shares his experience on how to implement the five UN-CMCoord tasks in responding to natural disasters.

CHAPTER 6: WORKING IN COMPLEX EMERGENCIES
Teresa Encarnação shares her experience on how to implement the five UN-CMCoord tasks in responding to complex emergencies.
